I don't know that I've ever been a good long-term thinker, but even so, I have definitely felt like the pandemic has provoked me into thinking even more short term than I had previously, so I relate to that. It sounds nice that you're able to have a friend come by and discuss all those big issues.
I hope you're able to find some peace with Zoey. Losing a loved one is never easy, but it sounds like you made the right call.
